Week 2

Dear Parents/Carers,

This week we are starting our topic ‘Amazing Animals’ with a focus on Zoo Animals. We will be using the story ‘Dear Zoo’ by Rod Campbell and basing our learning around this story. Alongside the English and Maths challenge we have put together a range of activities for you to complete at home with your child.

Fine Motor Activities

  • Create a spiral snake either by using the template available on the class pages of the school website or by cutting a spiral out of a piece of paper and then decorating it.
  • Create a monkey using the template available on the class pages of the school website
  • Use Lego or recycled materials to create an enclosure for one of the animals to be delivered in
  • Thread pasta tubes on to string or a pipe cleaner and cut out a snake head to create a pasta snake.

Creative Activities

  • Use the puppets available on the school website or use animals in your home to retell the story. Encourage the children to use phrases from the story.
  • Turn yourself into one of the animals by taking a picture of yourself and using your creative skills to make yourself look like one of the animals. For example you might colour in your nose and then add yellow paper around your face to make a Lion’s mane.
  • Create a picture or model of one of the animals. You might choose to paint or draw your animal or you might choose to make your animal out of recycled materials or Lego!
  • Learn the song ‘1, 2, 3, 4, 5 wait for my pet to arrive’ (to the tune of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 once I caught a fish alive’. Ask your grown up to record it and send it in for us to watch

1, 2, 3, 4, 5 wait you for my pet to arrive

1, 2, 3, 4, 5 wait for my pet arrive

6, 7, 8, 9, 10 will I send it back again

Why did you send them back?

I was scared it could attack

So, will you keep this one?

No, it’s grumpy and no fun!

1, 2, 3, 4, 5 wait for my pet arrive

6, 7, 8, 9, 10 will I send it back again

Why did you send them back?

It jumped out of my rucksack

So, will you keep this one?

Yes, it’s a puppy, so much fun!

Understanding the World

  • Discuss with your grown up all the things you know about zoo animals. Tell them what animals that you know, what they look like, what food they eat, where they live in the wild. What would you like to find out? Can you find the answers using books at home or on the internet?
  • Go to the website http://www.dearzooandfriends.com/games and play the matching pairs game.
